Where the data comes from

  • Title brands and history: NMVTIS (the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System), via ClearVin, an approved NMVTIS data provider.
  • Recalls, complaints and specs: NHTSA, the U.S. Department of Transportation's safety agency.
  • Salvage auction records and photos: Copart and IAAI sale records.
  • Window stickers: the manufacturer's own label PDF when it's published (Stellantis, GM and Kia); otherwise a sticker rebuilt from factory build data, labeled as rebuilt.

No VIN report has every event in a car's life. Accidents never reported to insurers or police won't appear in any database. Always pair a report with a pre-purchase inspection. More detail: Trust & sources.

How to spot a trustworthy VIN check site

  • It names the company behind it and gives a physical address.
  • It names its title data source, ideally an approved NMVTIS provider.
  • It shows the full price, including any renewal, before you enter a card.
  • It lets you cancel online without calling anyone.
  • It doesn't promise owner names and addresses, which federal law (DPPA) protects. See vehicle owner lookup.
