How a VIN is structured — all 17 characters

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is 17 characters split into three sections: positions 1–3 identify the manufacturer and country of assembly (WMI), positions 4–8 describe the model, engine, and body (VDS), position 9 is a check digit that validates the number, position 10 encodes the model year, position 11 the assembly plant, and positions 12–17 are the serial number. Decoding is free — the specification data is public via NHTSA. What a decoder cannot show is history: accidents, salvage and flood title brands, and odometer records require a vehicle history report.

Position	Section	What it encodes
1–3	WMI — World Manufacturer Identifier	Who built it and where: character 1 is the region/country, 2 the manufacturer, 3 the vehicle type or division. "1FT" = Ford truck built in the United States.
4–8	VDS — Vehicle Descriptor Section	The model, body style, engine, transmission, and restraint system, in a layout each manufacturer defines for itself — this is why a generic decoder needs per-make tables.
9	Check digit	A calculated character (0–9 or X) that validates the whole VIN. If it doesn't match, the VIN was mistyped — or altered.
10	Model year	A letter or digit encoding the model year on a 30-year cycle (see the full table below). I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 are never used.
11	Assembly plant	The specific factory, in the manufacturer's own plant code. Two otherwise-identical vehicles can differ here — and recalls sometimes apply to one plant's production only.
12–17	Serial number	The sequential production number. On high-volume vehicles the last six digits are what distinguish your exact car.

The check digit — how position 9 validates a VIN

Every character in the VIN converts to a number (letters via the SAE transliteration table), each is multiplied by its position's weight, and the sum modulo 11 must equal position 9 (with 10 written as "X"). This is why a single mistyped character almost always produces an invalid VIN instead of decoding as the wrong car — and why a "valid" VIN that fails its check digit is a red flag for tampering.

What does a VIN decoder tell you?

Decoding a VIN reveals what the vehicle IS: model year, make, model, trim, engine, transmission, drivetrain, body style, restraint systems, assembly plant, and country of manufacture. It does not reveal what HAPPENED to the vehicle — accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and auction history come from a vehicle history report, not the VIN itself.

Is a VIN decoder really free?

How do I decode a VIN manually?

Why does my VIN fail to decode?

Three common reasons: a mistyped character (the check digit at position 9 catches most of these — I, O and Q never appear in a VIN, so read those as 1 or 0), a pre-1981 vehicle (VINs were standardized to 17 characters in 1981; older ones vary by maker and need brand-specific decoding), or a non-US-market vehicle whose descriptor section isn't in NHTSA's database.

Can two vehicles share a VIN?

Legitimately, no — a VIN is unique to one vehicle. If two vehicles show the same VIN, one of them is almost certainly a clone: a stolen car wearing a copied VIN plate from a legally registered vehicle of the same make and model. A history report showing simultaneous records in two places is the classic sign.
