Texas license plate format

Current standard-issue Texas passenger plates use three letters followed by four digits on current standard-issue passenger plates; older seven-character mixed letter/number plates are still on the road — for example ABC-1234. Texas requires plates on the front and rear of passenger vehicles. Enter the characters exactly as printed; spaces and hyphens are ignored, and the letter O and digit 0 are treated as the plate agency prints them.

Does the TxDMV offer a license plate lookup?

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles does not offer a public plate-to-owner search. Its "Title Check — Look Before You Buy" page works from the VIN, not the plate, and points buyers to NMVTIS-approved history providers. The txdmv.gov plate pages that rank for "Texas license plate lookup" are about ordering and designing plates, not searching them.

Vehicle records are released only on a written Request for Texas Motor Vehicle Information (form VTR-275) that states a permissible use under the federal DPPA and Texas Transportation Code Chapter 730. A curious buyer or a driver in a road-rage incident is not a permissible use; an insurer, attorney, or tow operator with a claim is.

Paper tags are gone. House Bill 718 ended Texas paper temporary tags on July 1, 2025 — buyer's, dealer's, 30-day and one-trip paper tags are no longer issued, and dealers now put a metal general-issue plate on the vehicle at the time of sale. Every paper tag was a short-term permit, so a paper tag on a Texas vehicle today is either expired or counterfeit, and a metal plate can be searched like any other. A dealer-issued plate on a very recent sale may not resolve to a VIN yet; the VIN on the buyer's paperwork or the door-jamb label always will.

Texas's standard passenger plate is the "Texas Classic," a deliberately simple black-on-white design with the state name and a lone star, issued since 2012. It replaced a busier sky-and-mountains design and was praised for legibility — a plate that looks the same on a ranch truck in Amarillo and a sedan in Houston.
