NICB VINCheck — the short answer

NICB VINCheck is a free lookup from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (nicb.org) that answers exactly two questions about a VIN: has a participating insurer reported the vehicle stolen and not recovered, and has a participating insurer declared it a salvage total loss. It's legitimate, genuinely free, limited to five searches per IP per day, and worth running on any used car. What it is not is a vehicle history report: it contains no accident records, no title brands from state DMVs, no odometer readings, no lien indicators, and no auction history — and it only sees losses reported by NICB's member insurance companies.

What NICB VINCheck actually covers

The National Insurance Crime Bureau is a non-profit funded by insurance companies to fight vehicle theft and insurance fraud. Its VINCheck database is built from records that participating member insurers contribute:

  • Theft records — vehicles reported stolen to a member insurer and not yet recovered. If the theft claim resolves or the car is recovered, the record can drop off.
  • Salvage / total-loss records — vehicles a member insurer declared a total loss.

Two important consequences follow from "participating insurers." First, a car that was stolen but uninsured — or insured by a non-member — can come back completely clean. Second, a total loss settled outside an insurance claim (owner-retained damage, self-insured fleets) never enters the database at all. NICB itself describes VINCheck as one step in due diligence, not a substitute for a full history check.

What it misses — the checks that still need running

  • Title brands. Salvage, rebuilt, junk, flood, and odometer brands are recorded by state DMVs into NMVTIS, the U.S. Department of Justice's national title database. A car can pass NICB VINCheck and still carry a rebuilt-title brand — see our salvage title check.
